FAITH IS A LIFELONG JOURNEY

THE JOURNEY: For some it is a sense of wanting more, not knowing exactly what the "more" is… Many look to the Church as they prepare for marriage. For others, it evolves as a family grows, with babies being baptized, children receiving the sacraments… The journey itself is one of intellectual, emotional and spiritual conversion that is supported by our Adult Formation program.

Any adult, 18 years of age or older, who would like to become Catholic, receive First Communion, and/or Confirmation, is invited to join the R.C.I.A (Right of Christian Initiation for Adults) Program.

Please contact the Religious Formation Office at 231- 1340
for more information.

WHY DO WE KNEEL WHEN WE PRAY?

The Bible tells us to kneel.

"In the Scriptures God says, 'I swear by my very life that
everyone will kneel down and praise my name.'"
- Romans 14:11

"I kneel in prayer to the Father." - Ephesians 3:14

"At the name of Jesus every knee must bend. " - Philippians 2:10

It is an act of submission to a higher person. We render ourselves helpless and subject to another by the action. With our knees in bent position we cannot run or walk easily and another can restrain us. When we kneel before God we are saying that we trust him to control and motivate us. We are showing love.

Kneeling is a sign of humility. We submit our willpower to God's will and place God higher than ourselves. It's kind of like putting God on a pedestal. Of course, God is a spirit and not a statue, but kneeling lowers our self-image in order to elevate God in our vision. In ancient times people often knelt before kings and other nobles. It was a way of saying, "I will not walk without your command" or "I will not rise against you."

In most Catholic churches there are kneelers attached to pews. These are usually padded shelves on which you place your knees. In European cathedrals and basilicas there are often no pews or kneelers at all. Instead you will find a prie-dieu, a piece of furniture that is specifically designed for kneeling.

The word "prie-dieu" comes from the French words for "pray" and "God". It usually has a shelf for holding prayer books or hymnals - or just for the elbows. Prie-dieux (plural) are also used for weddings and at wakes. Some church denominations do not believe in kneeling. They even construct their pews to prevent the action.

We gladly kneel before our Creator.
