Dealing with the pain of losing a loved one is a difficult thing, but the Catholic funeral liturgy and traditions offer great comfort when confronting the death of a loved one. In the Catholic funeral, not only is comfort offered to those in mourning, but also, prayers are offered for the deceased. “Though separated from the living, the dead are still at one with the community of believers on earth and benefit from their prayers and intercessions.”(Order of Christian Funerals, no. 6)
“Do not grieve like those who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13b-14
Ordinarily two readings plus a responsorial psalm will precede the Gospel. The family, in collaboration with the Parish, can select one text each from the Old Testament Readings, Responsorial Psalms, and New Testament Readings and the Prayer of the Faithful. Non-biblical texts may not replace scriptural readings at Mass. Hymns will be chosen when your family meets with parish when planning a funeral, along with other details. Please see the reading and music choices below.
